Building Playgrounds ("Outdoor Universities")
One might be led to believe that rural townships, with all their open and undeveloped space, would have more playgrounds than the highly congested cities. However, in reality, the opposite actually holds true. Barring topographical features, rural townships throughout the country all look the same. They are desolate lands dominated by wide-open, unused land (private and public), empty lots and church yards, abandoned and condemned schools and homes, and grown-up, nature-reclaimed landscapes all devoid of children at play, playground equipment, or any other child-friendly apparatus. Of the few towns fortunate enough to have playgrounds, a good portion have typical old town parks with dilapidated, thirty-plus-years-old playground equipment that are both unreliable and unsafe.
Each township in every county in America should have a playground for children. Under this arrangement, most children would be within walking distance of a playground, but every child would be in very close proximity to at least one playground. Children have “little to nothing” constructive to do with their time in rural areas, and the idleness that they have been subjected to explains most of the trouble that they get into. That is why it is important that we adults provide positive outlets for children to be able to have fun running, jumping, and playing, while shouting and laughing at the top of their youthful lungs.
Future Unleashed partners with land owners, community leaders, churches, parents, local governments, local businesses and chambers of commerce, general contractors, other community organizations, and individual donors to work in concert to provide these positive outlets for our children. “It takes a village” to build these community playgrounds and to keep them forever safe for children to be children, to exercise, and to release bottled-up energy, worry-free. The goal of these projects and of all of our efforts is to get everyone involved so that the adults, the village elders, will feel a sense of ownership and responsibility in the security and upkeep of their community playground.
Building playgrounds in rural towns is one of our favorite programs, at Future Unleashed, as most of us come from rural towns and know what it is like to grow up without playgrounds, community centers, or recreation centers. The village or community mindset has been lost behind an inventory of problems prevalent in the direness of rural towns, which is why we plan to rebuild villages from the inside out, one playground at a time.
