Summer and Year-Round Literacy
Reading is the most fundamental and important skill of our era, the information age, and this world becomes a very scary and empty place to one who is locked out of said information. Even today, there are many adults who are without this skill and, therefore, are locked into a life of despair and dependency. And though we, at Future Unleashed, offer our literacy services to anyone of any age, we work tirelessly to “stop the bleeding” by blessing this generation of children with the gift of reading, unleashing their potential, and unlocking the doors to endless possibilities.
Reading/literacy is the basis of our program, while educating the whole child is hallmark of our program. We stress to our students: "Always finish what you start." We inspire and empower them through their own accomplishments, helping many of them to taste academic success for the first time in their young lives. Everyone wants to be successful, and most people enjoy being celebrated. Children, especially, need to taste academic success and to be celebrated therefor.
Incentives are merit-based, and rewards are earned throughout our program. Expectations and standards are set high, and we fully expect to have our graduates reading on their grade level, at a minimum. Our literacy program is designed to not only catch students up to their respective grade's reading levels but to surpass it. We take students (from first-time readers to students reading well below grade level) who have been labeled with learning disabilities and reading blocks and match them with the learning style that they best respond to in order to help them to become successful readers, ushering them into a new world reached only through reading. Once reading is no longer a barrier, students tend to become more focused and engaged in their school work, which, ultimately, aids in our quest to eradicate the despair that results in high drop-out and in-school crime rates.
From phonics to paragraph structure, reading comprehension, and retention, proper reading skills are essential for learning and understanding in all core subjects, for they are all interdependent. We help our students to connect the dots between subjects, and, once this happens, learning and retention are bolstered and reinforced, which guarantees academic success.
