Building Computer Labs
There are millions of children throughout the country who do not have computers, computer access, or internet at home. Despite not having computers or access at home, many children in urban areas still have access to computers through nearby community centers, churches, YMCAs, Boys and Girls clubs, and even recreation centers. The same cannot be said about the majority of children living in rural townships, areas devoid of necessary resources such as: community, recreation, and outreach centers; neighborhood libraries; “full-time” churches; etc. Without these local resource centers that often offer computer labs, children in rural towns are left with nowhere to turn. Roughly 30% of all student assignments necessitate computer use. The aforementioned facts are particularly troubling and disturbing, especially when so many children are unfairly being denied needed information and opportunities to do required assignments, which is a systemic problem.
To combat this problem, Future Unleashed partners with churches and community centers to build computer labs. The labs we establish are solely for outreach organizations that are willing to open their doors to children during after-school hours and to young adults during the day who are trying to apply for jobs, complete their GED, submit resumes, etc. We refurbish used computers and establish these labs for churches, centers, and other outreach organizations so that they may serve as a tool that will bolster their practicality and relevancy in their respective communities.
As with all of our programs, we encourage everyone in the community to get involved so that everyone can have, both, a sense of ownership and responsibility. Local churches, community elders, local businesses and chambers of commerce, individual donors, parents, educators, etc. are all asked to “bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse,” whether it be financial donations, volunteered time, talents, and/or expertise. When village elders work together on behalf of children, the positive impact far transcends their microcosm.
