After-School Tutoring and Enrichment
There are many people who believe that tutoring is simply standing over a child's shoulder and helping him or her with homework. No. That is actually referred to as homework aid. Future Unleashed's After-School Program focuses on the true meaning of tutoring: instructing and mentoring. While we do aid our students in their homework assignments and school projects, the true objectives are to teach them how to do their work on their own by teaching them the proper methods of problem-solving and how to think logically, logic being a very important branch of mathematics. Developing an array of effective problem-solving skills will not only help our students in their studies but it will begin to permeate every aspect of their young lives. When we connect the dots for them, it helps them to learn, as opposed to merely memorizing.
Etiquette, expectations, and learning are woven into every one of our activities. We pride ourselves on our ability to make learning fun, but we never lose focus on teaching our children the way, teaching them proper mannerisms. An ancient Kemetic proverb states: "Once you know better, you are expected to do better." 1 Corinthians 13:11 states: "When I was a child, I [spoke] as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." Many of our students experience their "coming-of-age" moment, when they realize that it is time to "put away childish things." We work diligently to help our children grow into responsible, hard-working adults and to make successful transitions from childhood, through adolescence, and into adulthood.
There is a great deal of learning in play. We use strategy games, computer simulations, and field trips to make learning fun, to expose our students to different cultures and to real places they read about in their textbooks, and to add culture to their young lives. Through these experiences, we help them to: raise their standards, goals, and self-expectations; dream big; and set plans to achieve their lofty goals. Our in-depth lessons of civilizations, past and present, enrich our students. Connecting our students with their ancestors and to the inventions and societal contributions thereof empowers them.
We serve students in grades K-8 from 3 pm to 6 pm, offering services that include: tutoring; homework aid; project and lab aid; EOG prep; mentoring; and a host of literacy and writing exercises and workshops. There are certain skill-sets that we believe every child should have per grade. Our program equips students with grade-appropriate tools and skill-sets that will allow them to be successful in any classroom, and we prepare them for and encourage them to embrace all challenges.
